Using Oreos in Writing

This week in Writers Workshop we are focusing on the beginning, middle and end in our stories. Today we used Oreo cookies as an example for the parts of a story. The top of the cookie is the beginning. The middle of the story is the middle of the Oreo which was double stuffed because we need alot of yummy details in our stories. The bottom of the Oreo is the end of the story because without it all the stuffing would fall out! Ask your child about the story they wrote today!

We had alot of GREAT authors in our classroom today!

She loves to go on trips and do fun activities!! Make sure when it is your turn to take her home, you do lots of fun things with Jacey and take extra good care of her!!! Remember to write in her journal (and take picuters) so when you bring her back on Monday the class can see what a great time she had!! This weekend she is going home with Ms. Tsengas :) We can't wait to see what exciting things they do together!

Science Nature Walk

Last week in Science we got to pretend to be scientists!!! We were learning to use some neat scientific tools all week. On Friday we learned to use magnifying glasses! Ms. Tsengas and Mrs. Atkins took us outside in the field and around the track on a nature walk to collect really cool things. When we came back inside we got to observe all the stuff we collected with a magnifying glass and wrote what we saw in our science journal. It was really hot out but we had a great time!

The President Spoke to Us Today!

This morning President Obama had a special speech to all the kids in classrooms around the US. Some of our friends weren't allowed to watch it so they had to go to a different classroom with Mrs. Moore. Everyone else got to watch the President on tv before lunch!

"We need every single one of you to develop your talents, skills and intellect so you can help solve our most difficult problems. If you don’t do that – if you quit on school – you’re not just quitting on yourself, you’re quitting on your country. "
- President Obama

President Obama talked about how important school is and that each and every one of us needs to do our best to work hard and never give up! He also told us to set goals for ourselves whether it be getting homework done every night or reading an extra book before going to bed. It may even be to make friends with someone who is playing alone on the playground.

Obama was really funny when he was talking about people who want to be rappers. This made some of our friends laugh! He was telling us that no matter what we want to be, it will take hard work and determination to get us there. There is no excuse no matter what circumstances you have in your life for not trying or having a bad attitude. So this year we are going to work hard and make our parents and teachers proud!

"So today, I want to ask you, what’s your contribution going to be? What problems are you going to solve? What discoveries will you make? What will a president who comes here in twenty or fifty or one hundred years say about what all of you did for this country? " - President Obama

"Where you are right now doesn’t have to determine where you’ll end up. No one’s written your destiny for you. Here in America, you write your own destiny. You make your own future." -President Obama
